Carmen Diode's World Top Ten Golfer List
By: Carmen Diode

Watching professional golf the week following a major tournament or the Ryder Cup is like eating tuna casserole cooked at home following a fabulous meal at a good 4-star restaurant (this does not hold true for the LPGA where all televised tournaments are like eating leftover tuna casserole – but I will be writing on how to fix this in a future article).

This week will actually not be too bad as the world's top touring pros are in Hertfordshire, England competing in the WGC-American Express Championship. It is not clear what this championship is for and it counts for nothing in terms of PGA stats, but the event will showcase many of the world's elite golfers. Since the event is being contested in England live play will occur in the wee hours of the morning for the US, and the European Ryder Cup team will still be dreadfully hung-over from their victory celebration but this will still be a better bet than the US PGA's Southern Farm Bureau Classic in Madison, Mississippi, featuring the likes of Duffy Waldorf, Larry Mize, Notah Begay III, Matt Kuchar, Alex Cejka, and Fred Funk. John Daly is also listed to play in the SFB Classic but it is even odds that they can get him out of the nearby casinos to make his scheduled tee time.

Eight of the world's top ten ranked professional golfers are playing WGC-AE Championship while none are featured in the SFB Classic. Only Phil Mickelson and Geoff Ogilvy from the world top ten are missing. It is believed that Mickelson's play at the Ryder Cup was so awful that he has been asked to not play in any more men's events for the remainder of the year by fellow pros who have become too embarrassed to play with him.

This leads me to unveil the newly created Carmen Diode World Top Ten Golfer List. The Official PGA Top Ten rankings utilize an algorithm so convoluted that the people who created it do not even understand it. The weakness in the PGA's official rankings is that it takes far too long to change the rank of the individuals on the list and it is limited to current male PGA touring pros. David Duvall, as an example, only slipped from the top ten last month. The new Carmen Diode Top Ten rank will be more real time and more reflective of how a golfer is performing from one week to the next. It will also not be limited to only male PGA touring pros.

The official and current PGA world top ten rankings:
  1. Tiger Woods
  2. Phil Mickelson
  3. Jim Furyk
  4. Vijay Singh
  5. Adam Scott
  6. Retief Goosen
  7. Ernie Els
  8. Luke Donald
  9. Sergio Garcia
  10. Geoff Ogilvy
